Saint Nicholas

Context

Saint Nicholas was a 4th-century bishop of Myra, in what is now Turkey, and is venerated as a saint in both Eastern and Western Christianity ^[1]. He is especially associated with generosity to children and with the traditions that later developed into Santa Claus ^[1]. His feast day is December 6 ^[1]. He is the patron saint of children, sailors, merchants, bakers, brides, and the falsely accused, and is also a patron of Greece and Russia ^[1]. Some sources say he was born in Patara and served as bishop of Myra ^[2]. His gift-giving legend influenced the Santa Claus tradition ^[3]. He is sometimes confused with Santa Claus, but they are distinct figures ^[1].
