Our Story

Northern Beacon Media Inc. launched Northern Focus in 2022 to fill a specific gap in Canadian digital journalism: clear, practical regional news written for English‑speaking readers across the country. While national outlets often overlook municipal and provincial details, and local newspapers shrink, the company saw an opportunity to provide trustworthy coverage that helps people understand the decisions shaping their communities.

Why was Northern Focus founded?

Northern Beacon Media Inc. identified a growing need for straight‑forward, fact‑based reporting on municipal affairs, provincial policy, and regional business in Canada. Many English‑speaking readers lacked a single source that covered city councils, transit plans, provincial budgets, and community stories without spin or oversimplification. Northern Focus was created to serve that audience with concrete, practical journalism.

The publication’s registered office is at Unit 12, 95 King Street East, Toronto, Ontario (Ontario Business Registry number 1003194827). From day one, the goal has been to deliver regional coverage that is both comprehensive and easy to understand, whether the reader is in downtown Toronto, a small town in Northern Ontario, or anywhere else in Canada.

What is our editorial philosophy?

Editor‑in‑Chief Catherine Roy sets the editorial standards for Northern Focus. Her philosophy is simple: every article must be accurate, clearly sourced, and written for a general audience without jargon. No story is published without a named writer, a human editor’s review, and a fact‑check by the standards team.

Catherine Roy (catherine.roy@northernfocus.org) is responsible for all publication decisions and corrections. She believes that trustworthy journalism requires transparency about how reporting is done and why certain stories are covered. AI‑assisted tools may support research or drafting, but they never replace human editorial judgment; every piece is approved by a human editor before publication. The editorial mission is to help readers understand municipal, provincial, and national issues without advocacy or oversimplification.

How is the newsroom structured?

Northern Focus organises its reporting around dedicated desks, each led by an experienced editor. This structure ensures that every topic — from city hall to provincial economics — gets deep, consistent coverage from journalists who know the beat.

The desk structure includes: Marc Tremblay (Managing Editor) oversees the daily newsroom, headline review, and commissioning; Hannah Walsh (Municipal Affairs Editor) covers city councils, transit, and local governance; Kevin Sullivan (Community & Events Correspondent) reports on neighbourhoods, local culture, and community events; Jessica Morin (Provincial Affairs Editor) handles provincial policy and regional economics; and Andrew Leblanc (Standards & Fact‑Checking Lead) manages source verification and corrections.
