Newsletter

The Northern Focus Briefing is a daily email newsletter from Northern Focus (northernfocus.org), owned and operated by Northern Beacon Media Inc., that delivers essential Canadian regional journalism straight to your inbox. Each edition curates the day’s most important municipal updates, provincial policy developments, and clear explainers on national issues, written by our named editorial team and reviewed under Editor-in-Chief Catherine Roy.

What is in the Northern Focus Briefing?

The Northern Focus Briefing contains a handpicked selection of essential Canadian regional news, municipal affairs, and provincial policy stories published that day on northernfocus.org. Every edition includes at least one municipal update from cities and towns across Canada, a provincial policy note from our Provincial Affairs Editor Jessica Morin, and a community- or culture-focused story from Community & Events Correspondent Kevin Sullivan. We also include “why it matters” context — a short explainer paragraph that connects a local decision to a national trend or policy, making complex topics accessible without oversimplification. Each newsletter edition is written, edited, and fact-checked by our team before it reaches your inbox.

How often is the newsletter sent?

The Northern Focus Briefing is delivered every weekday (Monday through Friday) by 7:00 AM Eastern Time. Subscribers also receive special editions — occasional deep-dive explainers, election night roundups, or regional policy briefs — as events warrant. Special editions are always clearly labelled in the subject line, and we never increase frequency beyond what we commit to at sign-up. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email.

Who curates the Northern Focus Briefing?

The newsletter is curated by our full editorial team under the direction of Editor-in-Chief Catherine Roy and Managing Editor Marc Tremblay. Hannah Walsh, our Municipal Affairs Editor, selects and writes the municipal headlines; Kevin Sullivan drafts the community and events segments; Jessica Morin handles provincial policy; and Andrew Leblanc, our Standards & Fact-Checking Lead, verifies all facts and sources before inclusion. Every edition is reviewed by a human editor before sending — no AI alone selects or approves content. You can meet the full team on our Our Team page.

What you can expect from us

You can expect a newsletter that is trustworthy, concrete, and free of spin. Each story is written by a named journalist, reviewed by an editor, and fact-checked before it appears in the Briefing. We never fabricate quotes, sources, or interviews — our AI-assisted tools support research and formatting only, and every piece is approved by a human editor. The Northern Focus Briefing is designed to help you understand how municipal, provincial, and national decisions affect your community, without clickbait or oversimplification.
